Some Helpful Tips to Quit Smoking Successfully

Following are some helpful tips that will help you quit smoking for good.

Quitting smoking is not the easiest of things; some scientists have even remarked that it is more addictive than heroin.

And this of course, highlights how hard it can be to stay committed to the cause and to remain on path of being the much sought after non smoker.

Hopefully the following helpful tips to quit smoking will be of benefit to you so you either quit or you stay committed to the healthy path of being a non smoker.

Planning Your Quit Smoking Target Date

Setting Quit DateThere has been a few studies that suggest that people are more likely to quit successfully if they plan ahead and quit on a Monday – the start of the week.

For some reason, people like the notion of being able to start a week afresh. This also perhaps highlights why people attempt to quit on New Year’s Day as it is a new year. What’s important is that you do pick a date, preferably a Monday, and start to brainstorm and plan ahead for this day and beyond.

  • What will you be doing on that Monday to make it easier to stop?
  • Will you avoid social occasions in that first week or will you use those occasions to desensitize yourself from smoking and being social?
  • How will you reward yourself in that first week?

Boost Your Morale

Rewarding yourself is of high importance.

Sometimes quitting smoking can be so “painful” that you’ll need to boost your morale so that you remain committed to the cause. Getting a massage, or going out for dinner are some positive ways to feel better.

The withdrawal process can sometimes throw up all sorts of conditions, from headaches, to nausea. The more time you spend working on feeling good will limit the impact of this natural detoxifying period that starts just after quitting.

Anti-Smoking Aids

Go see your doctor to make sure there is no antismoking medication that you can take that can help the process. There are several drugs on the market today that have been designed to help a person quit smoking – to reduce the power of the cravings so that quitting can be done with more ease. For those who are weary of pharmaceutical side effects, there are stop smoking herbs that have no known side effects.

Leading up to your quitting day, have your cars and house deodorized and you can begin the process of cutting down by not smoking in these areas.

You’ll enjoy the fresh smelling car and cigarette smell free house and this will create a barrier between you and smoking in these areas as you won’t want to muck up the nice smell that now exists.

Addiction Psychology

Understand that every former smoker is just one puff away from becoming a packet a day smoker once more. A non smoker cannot have one more puff, EVER. Knowing this and understanding this will give you a greater ability to say no to cigarettes now and in the future.

With that said, avoid using certain words and meanings to avoid putting too much pressure on yourself. Avoid such internal dialogue that includes “forever”.

It is much harder to quit smoking “forever” than it is to quit smoking “for this year.” Make your emotional environment more manageable by setting realistic goals that give you a greater chance of long term success.

If you need to stop smoking by saying “this week is my perfect week – I’m not going to eat junk nor smoke for this perfect week” – All the better.

Additional Quit Support

Deep Breathing SupportLearn a craving busting technique such as deep breathing. Deep breathing and or self hypnosis can release and or reduce stress making it easier to last through the cravings.

Avoid coffee and tea and other forms of caffeine products. There are some studies which suggest that caffeine increases the propensity of cravings.

Further to that, most smokers have a coffee and a cigarette together, if you stop doing one, but continue the other, it’ll be clear to some part of your system that something is wrong and will yearn and send signals for a cigarette (or in short, drinking coffee=increased cravings).

Hold Consciously the Stop Smoking Benefits

Write down all the benefits you’ll receive by being a non smoker and carry a list of these benefits around with you in your wallet or purse.

Anytime you get a craving or feel a need to smoke, you can simply read the list and you’ll feel a lot better instantaneously knowing you’re on the path!

I hope this little tip sheet has been of some benefit to you. Best of Luck!

Kick Butts Day(s) the Young People’s Great American Smoke Out

Quitting smoking is hard.

And the more help and support that we can give smokers to help them quit, the better off we all – men, women, children, dogs, cats, etc. will be.

March 24th was the 15th Annual Kick Butts day celebrated across the country.

Kids and young adults across the country will stand up to ask legislators to protect them from the tobacco industry. Protect them? The tobacco industry is not pulling teens and young adults out of their beds, homes or schools and telling them that they must smoke cigarettes or else.

Kick Butts Day – Are They Sending the Wrong Message?

toxic cigsThe way this Kick Butts Day is designed is open for discussion, because the creators of the day are pointing fingers at the legislators, the tobacco industry and everyone else except those that are currently smoking. Why should just legislators and the tobacco industry get all the blame? Yes, advertising campaigns that target youth is an indirect way to entice young adults to start smoking, but they didn’t force them …did they? Why are the creators of this day not also taking responsibility?

What if the Kick Butts Day focused more on getting teens and young adults to quit if they have started smoking and their friends rallying in support of them quitting. The day could commemorate the commitment to quitting, like a commitment to sobriety. The Kick Butts Day could be rallying around those that we know smoke and asking them to commit to quitting while also pointing them to support systems to help them.

What if we also celebrated those who have quit! Honoring them for taking responsibility for their life, health, and the impact smoking has on their loved ones. We could also remember  those we have lost to cigarette smoking.

Putting a Positive Spin on a Positive Effort

We have rehabs for alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, perhaps we need more rehab centers offering innovative approaches to smoking cessation. And we don’t need rehab centers because if we can rally to vote, rally to fight for healthcare, then we can rally to help teens and young people quit on the Kick Butts Day.

So let’s take a step to help smokers stop. An educational and positive spin on this day could implemented, instead of just name calling, or what some might label as cry baby blaming and finger pointing at legislators and the tobacco industry. The Kick Butt Day creators could make this a day of positive action rather than a day of focusing on negative reaction.

A Different Approach

Let’s think about this a moment.

Kick Butts Day could be a rally cry one day each month of the year. One day a month could be a way to check in and hold accountable those who have made the commitment to quit smoking.

One day a month and if that is too much then one day every three months those that have committed to smoking will be obligated to answer to their peers, parents, friends, etc. as to what they are doing and if in fact they have quit.

Diaries should be kept on a daily basis so that the potential quitters are mindful of what they have promised to do and make note of the bad habits that keep them from fulfilling their commitment to quit smoking.

This would certainly be a morale booster for those who have quit and an example to peers and those who want to kick but have been afraid to try.

Kick Butts Day could create a movement to eradicate the need to smoke if we focus inwards instead of outwards.

The Five D’s For Quitting Smoking

The five D’s provide a process to help smokers keep from lighting up.

Therefore, when the urge to smoke strikes remember the 5 D’s.

You could even put a post-it note with these queues at places you usually go to fulfill your nicotine habit.

By alerting your conscious mind you will support building new subconscious patterns to weaken your tobacco dependency and lay a foundation for smoking cessation.

The 5 D’s for Quitting Smoking

  1. DELAY for three to five minutes and the urge will pass.
  2. DRINK WATER to fight off cravings.
  3. DO SOMETHING ELSE to fight off cravings.
  4. DEEP BREATHE as it will relax you. Close your eyes and take 10 slow deep breaths.
  5. DISCUSS your thoughts and feelings with someone close to you or a support group.

Quit Smoking Techniques: Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises too can prove to be useful in controlling the urge to smoke.

It is common knowledge that the human body takes in a lot of toxic substances, both through the air and through food and drink.

Apart from this, various toxins are also released in the body as a result of the various processes that are going on. These toxins have to be released on a continuous basis or else they will accumulate in the body with serious results.

One of the best ways of releasing these toxins is by means of exhaling while breathing. One funny fact is that most of do not breathe properly. Just take a look at the picture like this.

With each breath that we take, we take in oxygen. This oxygen is carried by the blood to every cell of the body and every cell must indeed get enough oxygen not just to survive but to remain
healthy as well.

Old Lady Cartoon PictureSo it is imperative that we make an honest attempt to breathe properly. But first of course we have to make sure that we are breathing in unpolluted air.

The time best for breathing exercises is early in the morning when the air is comparatively unpolluted. Now what you have to do is this. Again, sit comfortably so that there is no strain to any part of your body. It is not imperative that you close your eyes, but I have always noticed that the exercise works better when the eyes are closed.

When you are ready, what you have to do is to breathe in deeply and slowly, and feel the fresh air filling up your lungs until it just can’t take any more. Conjure up images of the air encircling throughout your body and reaching every cell, literally bathing it with oxygen.

Of course it doesn’t happen that way but the image helps a lot. Then hold your breath for a few seconds and then very slowly exhale letting out all that foul air.

Again conjure up an image of all the toxins being released from your body. Every cell has become free of the burden it was carrying. Now pause for a second or two and again breathe in deeply, slowly letting your lungs fill up with all that good, clean, rejuvenating air.

Repeat this exercise at least ten times and take your time for it taking care not to rush through.

When you have done that part of the exercise it is time for the second part. Again sit with your eyes closed, but this time, keep one nostril closed with the help of your index finger.

It is best to close the right nostril first and that too with your right index finger. Now breathe in deeply and slowly through your left nostril keeping the right nostril closed. When you have held air for a second or two, release your right nostril and breathe out through it.

While you are breathing out conjure up an image of all the toxins being released form your head and the brain especially. And as you breathe in conjure up images of the clean air circulating though out your brain freeing it of all the worries and trouble and lightening it.

Repeat this exercise with the other nostril closed and in this way alternate between the nostrils at least ten times. The entire breathing exercise need not take more than ten minutes. But you will be surprised at how light hearted and free you will feel after the exercise.

Once you have practiced it for three or four mornings, you will be in a position to do the exercise each time you get the urge to smoke. The breathing exercise can easily become a substitute for the urge to take in that hourly doze of nicotine.

My Daughter Has Dain Bramage

Dain Bramage is what you get when you quit by using the patch, and my daughter’s got it in spades right now.

Please don’t think I’m poking fun at my own daughter! I only know the syndrome because I myself used the patch as directed, and I instantly lost about 80% of my IQ points. The first 2 weeks of my Quit were like being strung out on some kind of mind-numbing drug.

Oh wait – the 21 mg patch is a mind numbing drug!

Thankfully my girl has a good job with a good boss and good people to work with.

I contract my services out, which means if I don’t work, I don’t eat. Quite literally, my whole livelihood was at stake. If I am unproductive I don’t pay bills, I don’t have electricity, I don’t have internet, I don’t have anything unless I have the ability to work and get stuff done.

So here’s what I did.

Advice When Quitting Smoking

I wrote to every single one of my clients. I told them that, to my way of thinking, if I didn’t quit now I’d be smoking until I died, and that day would come too soon for my liking.

I simply appealed to them to stick with me. I warned them that, realistically I could be looking at another 2 months of spotty performance of my duties. I told them I could be snappish or prone to tears. I told them that, even though I knew I could lose my very fragile new business, I still felt I had to go for it.

Every one of them stuck by me. Not one said “I’ll take my business elsewhere.” And, surprisingly, I learned that many of them have first-hand experience with the symptoms that arise when quitting smoking because they smoked in the past as well.

Picture of Swinging GirlI went through a period of slim rations, to be sure. It wasn’t easy in a lot of ways… but in all the ways that count, it has been wonderful. I’ve returned to being a productive professional, and I can say without hesitation that every day beyond that 2 week mark represented a steady improvement in my ability to function professionally.

From Day 9 on, every day was a great place to be. The worst is behind you by that point, so every day is a new discovery of how good it feels to be Quit. You begin encountering all sorts of benefits, without even anticipating them. The day my taste and smell came back… WOW. Then a week later — double wow — MORE taste and scent! No more yellow-stained fingers. My skin improved, my teeth get whiter and whiter and whiter.

It just keeps getting better and you’ve got even more good stuff ahead. Every crave’s voice gets weaker, and every day you feel the freedom more and more. People look at you and say “Did you do something different with your hair?” But you know it’s the wonderful smell of your shampoo they’re noticing.

Somebody looks at you one day and says “What kind of skin care do you use?” because your face is just so… radiant! Somebody else says “Did you take a vacation or something? Been to a tanning salon?” because your skin is much rosier and not so gray anymore. It just unfolds, and it is all so very wonderful, so liberating, and adds so much to your self-respect and self-esteem.

Please set aside your panic and fear and think long and hard about what is important, where to place your priorities. I don’t know what stage of life you’re in, what your quit motivators are, if you’re a kid or a parent or a grandparent like me. All I know is – somebody loves you.

To somebody, you are the sun, the moon, the starlit sky. There is somebody that you’re unaware of who thinks of you every day. There’s somebody who has always loved you. There are many who need you in their lives. People you know, people you went to school with, people you haven’t seen in years.

All of us who are addicted struggle to regain our freedom and learn to live smoke-free. We know we are addicts, and we do understand that recovering from an addiction means a period of detox. It’s part and parcel of what we have done to ourselves by starting to smoke. We help each other through and we survive. Stick with it – because oh MAN is it ever worth it!

Don’t let the whole “dain bramage” syndrome stand in your way. Work will always be there. I hope you will be, too.

Over The Bridge and Through the Woods

To big tobacco’s house we go?

Quitting smoking involves a major life change and does strange things to the human psyche.

We can convince ourselves of almost anything if we truly grasp onto a belief in our minds.

Thinking that you cannot quit smoking is one such belief that will literally kill you!

As a very young child, I thought that I would never be able to tie my shoes. Mother always tied them for me without taking the time to teach me how.

I vaguely remember sitting in my room practicing how to tie with tears streaming down my cheeks. Having little or no instruction with a new process often makes it difficult to accomplish the process at one sitting.

Green River Timber Crib DamThroughout our lives, we try on new learning experiences.

When we graduate high school, we enter either college or the work force. When we get married, we learn how to work an intimate relationship or how to dump our partner in a divorce. Before we start a business, we learn how to write a business plan.

The process of quitting smoking is a learning experience too! You cannot simply quit smoking after twenty years and not take into consideration that there may be some physical, mental, and emotional discomforts (quit smoking baggage.)

If you anticipate that quitting is a painful process, this idea will ignite a desire to flee (smoke) or stay and fight (remain quit.)

Ideas first spark in the mind. Once an idea ignites, you can toss it in the trunk or become a driver and steer the vehicle. The ideas in your mind can also be like passengers or the driver in a car. You have a driver who is in charge of getting the car and passengers to a destination.

You have passengers who anticipate that the driver and the car will get them to a destination. The passengers are always dependent upon the driver and the vehicle. The driver is always dependent upon the vehicle.

Once you realize that you are the only one who can make the choice to steer your thoughts away from the destination of big tobacco, you will learn to embrace a new sense of freedom and power over crave thoughts. Remember that big tobacco wants you to think that you need their product in order to live life to the fullest.

Have you ever wondered why Philip Morris USA supports a single, consistent public health message on the role of cigarette smoking in the development of disease in smoker’s yet they continue to peddle death and disease?

Cigarette companies spend millions of dollars each year on marketing and research alone. Big tobacco wants lifetime consumers and they know that in order to train a child in the way they should go, that they have to begin this process of subtle advertising by consistently innovating new ways to market their product to our youth.

In the United States, smoking-related illnesses account for more than 440,000 deaths each year. Please do not allow big tobacco to manipulate and control how long you live.

Life in itself is precious. Take back your lives from big tobacco and do it now, before it is too late.

Don’t Miss The Mark!

Sometimes people just don’t get it.

They tend to think that they can continue on with life just as it is and not have to change anything about themselves.

They forget that life really is about change, and fail to witness the evidence as marked by the four seasons becoming their own worst enemy in the battle to quit smoking.

It’s easier to talk themselves into it. They fall into the trap they have set up for themselves.

They are their own enemy if they convince themselves that they just need:

    • One more puff
    • One more cigarette
    • One more pack
    • One more carton
    • One more week
    • One more month
    • One more year
    • One more decade

They can continue hurting themselves for the rest of their natural lives and turn their time into something addictively insane during the interim.

Picture of Word MarkThey mark their days as being an entirely productive experience while they suck on the other end of a toxic pesticide stick. And they do this every thirty to ninety minutes! Is this you? It was me 2.5 years ago.

      Hey Listen!

Don’t miss the mark! Get off the butts and get busy with life. Only you can choose to be proactive, and live to breathe!

      Observe the four seasons closely:

      Spring is birth

      Summer is youth

      Fall touts middle age

      While Winter bleeds the elderly…

      Know your limitations.

      Everything in life is circular.

What you do in your lifetime will eventually come back to bless or haunt you.

Use your time on earth wisely.

      Don’t miss the mark!
