Some Helpful Tips to Quit Smoking Successfully

Following are some helpful tips that will help you quit smoking for good.

Quitting smoking is not the easiest of things; some scientists have even remarked that it is more addictive than heroin.

And this of course, highlights how hard it can be to stay committed to the cause and to remain on path of being the much sought after non smoker.

Hopefully the following helpful tips to quit smoking will be of benefit to you so you either quit or you stay committed to the healthy path of being a non smoker.

Planning Your Quit Smoking Target Date

Setting Quit DateThere has been a few studies that suggest that people are more likely to quit successfully if they plan ahead and quit on a Monday – the start of the week.

For some reason, people like the notion of being able to start a week afresh. This also perhaps highlights why people attempt to quit on New Year’s Day as it is a new year. What’s important is that you do pick a date, preferably a Monday, and start to brainstorm and plan ahead for this day and beyond.

  • What will you be doing on that Monday to make it easier to stop?
  • Will you avoid social occasions in that first week or will you use those occasions to desensitize yourself from smoking and being social?
  • How will you reward yourself in that first week?

Boost Your Morale

Rewarding yourself is of high importance.

Sometimes quitting smoking can be so “painful” that you’ll need to boost your morale so that you remain committed to the cause. Getting a massage, or going out for dinner are some positive ways to feel better.

The withdrawal process can sometimes throw up all sorts of conditions, from headaches, to nausea. The more time you spend working on feeling good will limit the impact of this natural detoxifying period that starts just after quitting.

Anti-Smoking Aids

Go see your doctor to make sure there is no antismoking medication that you can take that can help the process. There are several drugs on the market today that have been designed to help a person quit smoking – to reduce the power of the cravings so that quitting can be done with more ease. For those who are weary of pharmaceutical side effects, there are stop smoking herbs that have no known side effects.

Leading up to your quitting day, have your cars and house deodorized and you can begin the process of cutting down by not smoking in these areas.

You’ll enjoy the fresh smelling car and cigarette smell free house and this will create a barrier between you and smoking in these areas as you won’t want to muck up the nice smell that now exists.

Addiction Psychology

Understand that every former smoker is just one puff away from becoming a packet a day smoker once more. A non smoker cannot have one more puff, EVER. Knowing this and understanding this will give you a greater ability to say no to cigarettes now and in the future.

With that said, avoid using certain words and meanings to avoid putting too much pressure on yourself. Avoid such internal dialogue that includes “forever”.

It is much harder to quit smoking “forever” than it is to quit smoking “for this year.” Make your emotional environment more manageable by setting realistic goals that give you a greater chance of long term success.

If you need to stop smoking by saying “this week is my perfect week – I’m not going to eat junk nor smoke for this perfect week” – All the better.

Additional Quit Support

Deep Breathing SupportLearn a craving busting technique such as deep breathing. Deep breathing and or self hypnosis can release and or reduce stress making it easier to last through the cravings.

Avoid coffee and tea and other forms of caffeine products. There are some studies which suggest that caffeine increases the propensity of cravings.

Further to that, most smokers have a coffee and a cigarette together, if you stop doing one, but continue the other, it’ll be clear to some part of your system that something is wrong and will yearn and send signals for a cigarette (or in short, drinking coffee=increased cravings).

Hold Consciously the Stop Smoking Benefits

Write down all the benefits you’ll receive by being a non smoker and carry a list of these benefits around with you in your wallet or purse.

Anytime you get a craving or feel a need to smoke, you can simply read the list and you’ll feel a lot better instantaneously knowing you’re on the path!

I hope this little tip sheet has been of some benefit to you. Best of Luck!

Herbal Stop Smoking Aid – The Science Behind Essential Breathing Pipes

One of our website visitors recently alerted us to a fascinating way to help smokers quit.

For a moment, imagine using the same delivery device used for centuries that imposed the negative effects of nicotine dependency being transformed into an herbal healing tool.

This is the story of how the president of Femlogic, Inc., Tanya Moreau-Smith, discovered and created a safe and effective way to help people through the use of Essential Breathing Pipes.

Learn how Tanya’s discoveries progressed to the adaptation of smoking pipes into breathing pipes, and how they are now changing lives for the better.

It Started with an Interest in Alternative Healing

Essential OilsI’ve been interested in alternative healthy healing to assist people and pets in getting and staying well for a long time.

This interest began with internal preparations for everything from stomach issues to immune boosting, kidney and liver detoxifying, and so forth.

A few years ago, I added a collection of my own skin care formulations to my internal herbal preparations, and went on to create the company Femlogic, Inc.

Now, we are adding another line of products that we are very excited about.

From Smoking Pipes to Breathing Pipes

Essential Potions is the name of our line of skin care products that we have been sharing for a while now, and Essential Breathing Pipes are our new product line that we’re currently in the process of patenting.

These are pipes made specifically for the portable aromatherapy dispersion of essential oils or liquids through aspiration. We call them breathing pipes because they’re most certainly not smoking pipes although they look nearly the same.

The pipe itself has never been the guilty party, only the tobacco and toxins delivered through it when burned.

So why not make the pipe a tool to aid in breathing!  Keep the soothing benefits – the repetitive oral and tactile gratification,  but loose the negative substances and the affects from the toxic elements.

NASA Study on the Benefits of Peppermint Oil

While researching new findings – herbs, rainforest elements, essential oils and the like for my skin care line, I came upon a NASA funded study about Peppermint oil.

I was amazed at the list of benefits of breathing peppermint oil vapor could bring to people.

Some proven benefits included:

  • Eating 3000 fewer calories in fat and sugar a week
  • Aiding people in quitting the smoking habit.
  • Amazing results with alleviating stress and calming anxiety
  • Relief from stomach upset
  • Headache Relief
  • Keep drivers alert when behind the wheel
  • Increasing brain function by up to 28 percent
  • Increased physical abilities by up to 14 percent

This list actually kept going on and on!

With a lab full of essential oils, herbs and the like, finding a new way to utilize peppermint oil in a compact and portable, safe, mess and pain free way was right up my alley.

Incense and Peppermints

Flowering Peppermint PlantThe Nasa study lead me to contemplate who in today’s hectic manic world wouldn’t find comfort and aid from using this remarkable oil.  The problem I saw was that you either had to heat the essential oil of peppermint in a traditional aromatherapy burner to benefit or use a nasal inhaler like the athletes have done to increase their performance – never one of my favorite delivery systems.

First I began experimenting by reworking cigarette and cigar holders until I adapted them thus creating my new peppermint oil dispersion system.

I tried them first by breathing on my pipes throughout the day, day in and day out, the majority of my day I found I was using a pipe.

Peppermint Euphoria

The first I felt was a joyful almost euphoric sensation, a sense of peace with that first big deep breath and exhale.  I found this so fascinating and my thought processes became more creative. It felt like I could think outside the box.

Then I noticed my energy level became extremely high.  I found I can curb my appetite and with 5 minutes of pipe breathing before a meal I would eat less. It also helped when I felt the need to normally have a snack.

I was excited to be on the receiving end of the peppermint oil benefits and with this firsthand experience I knew I was on to something big that could help a lot of people.

Giving the Pipe a Smoker’s Test

Essential Breathing PipesI began making various pipes for friends and family and started receiving great feedback.  I gave them to smokers and non smokers alike.

I experimented with version after version working to make a completely heat free portable aromatherapy device. Then came the thought – simple, think simple.  So, I began working backwards and came to the place we’re at now.

The smokers I gave one of my new portable devices to actually stopped smoking using just the pipe! It was as if they turned their addiction from the cigarette onto the pipe, sucking on them for all they were worth at times.

I felt that was just fine! A great exchange and they could use the pipe all day long if need be – at their desk, driving, whenever they would have grabbed a smoke.

No nicotine, no toxins, just organic peppermint vapor, pure and simple.

Amazingly, we discovered with use they were hardly taking in any oil, it was all vapor!

Maybe two-three drops of oil  a week was added to their pipes at most, the majority of people we found use more like a drop or two every three to four weeks.

Smoker’s Transition to Stop Smoking

We found that after a few weeks of the transference from smoking cigarettes to sucking on their Essential pipe the smokers began using it a little less and less.  They went from manic use to whenever they were stressing at work, in traffic and furious behind the wheel, experiencing headaches, or stomach upset, or feeling hungry between meals.

Now we find,  two to three months after the beginning of the quitting process, the now non smokers are using their pipes  strictly for pleasure – just like the non smokers that have found the comfort in the repetitive hand to mouth movement.

The smokers didn’t transfer their addiction to candy, cookies, junk food, coffee, cokes and other addictive substances.  They didn’t even gain weight.  What they used to for transfering their addition was just a stage and it was a  healthy one which was helpful for cleaning and improving lung function on top of all the other benefits found in the studies.

The Latest Essential Oil Breathing Pipes

Essential Breathing PipesOur most recent development is launching our hand carved hard wood pipes which are made in the USA. And we are collecting additional wood crafters who are excited about the benefits of the pipes and are interested in making them.

Our new Lucite pipes are made in Italy.  We are also working on new designs such as retrofitting bowl style pipes with our dispersion elements.

Oh, and the pipes come in a range of prices from very affordable to more expensive, and even those perfect for pipe collectors.

You can learn more about Femlogic’s Essential Breathing Pipes by visiting their website. You will be received with enthusiasm and find a really nice assortment of pipes to choose from.

The Five D’s For Quitting Smoking

The five D’s provide a process to help smokers keep from lighting up.

Therefore, when the urge to smoke strikes remember the 5 D’s.

You could even put a post-it note with these queues at places you usually go to fulfill your nicotine habit.

By alerting your conscious mind you will support building new subconscious patterns to weaken your tobacco dependency and lay a foundation for smoking cessation.

The 5 D’s for Quitting Smoking

  1. DELAY for three to five minutes and the urge will pass.
  2. DRINK WATER to fight off cravings.
  3. DO SOMETHING ELSE to fight off cravings.
  4. DEEP BREATHE as it will relax you. Close your eyes and take 10 slow deep breaths.
  5. DISCUSS your thoughts and feelings with someone close to you or a support group.

Quit Smoking Techniques: Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises too can prove to be useful in controlling the urge to smoke.

It is common knowledge that the human body takes in a lot of toxic substances, both through the air and through food and drink.

Apart from this, various toxins are also released in the body as a result of the various processes that are going on. These toxins have to be released on a continuous basis or else they will accumulate in the body with serious results.

One of the best ways of releasing these toxins is by means of exhaling while breathing. One funny fact is that most of do not breathe properly. Just take a look at the picture like this.

With each breath that we take, we take in oxygen. This oxygen is carried by the blood to every cell of the body and every cell must indeed get enough oxygen not just to survive but to remain
healthy as well.

Old Lady Cartoon PictureSo it is imperative that we make an honest attempt to breathe properly. But first of course we have to make sure that we are breathing in unpolluted air.

The time best for breathing exercises is early in the morning when the air is comparatively unpolluted. Now what you have to do is this. Again, sit comfortably so that there is no strain to any part of your body. It is not imperative that you close your eyes, but I have always noticed that the exercise works better when the eyes are closed.

When you are ready, what you have to do is to breathe in deeply and slowly, and feel the fresh air filling up your lungs until it just can’t take any more. Conjure up images of the air encircling throughout your body and reaching every cell, literally bathing it with oxygen.

Of course it doesn’t happen that way but the image helps a lot. Then hold your breath for a few seconds and then very slowly exhale letting out all that foul air.

Again conjure up an image of all the toxins being released from your body. Every cell has become free of the burden it was carrying. Now pause for a second or two and again breathe in deeply, slowly letting your lungs fill up with all that good, clean, rejuvenating air.

Repeat this exercise at least ten times and take your time for it taking care not to rush through.

When you have done that part of the exercise it is time for the second part. Again sit with your eyes closed, but this time, keep one nostril closed with the help of your index finger.

It is best to close the right nostril first and that too with your right index finger. Now breathe in deeply and slowly through your left nostril keeping the right nostril closed. When you have held air for a second or two, release your right nostril and breathe out through it.

While you are breathing out conjure up an image of all the toxins being released form your head and the brain especially. And as you breathe in conjure up images of the clean air circulating though out your brain freeing it of all the worries and trouble and lightening it.

Repeat this exercise with the other nostril closed and in this way alternate between the nostrils at least ten times. The entire breathing exercise need not take more than ten minutes. But you will be surprised at how light hearted and free you will feel after the exercise.

Once you have practiced it for three or four mornings, you will be in a position to do the exercise each time you get the urge to smoke. The breathing exercise can easily become a substitute for the urge to take in that hourly doze of nicotine.

Dying from Emphysema

Tobacco has taken its toll on Haines resident Jim Hamp. His wife and mother both died of tobacco-related cancers, and Hamp is dying from emphysema.

A longtime charter and commercial fisherman, Hamp, 68, now has to wear a nasal cannula (a plastic hose that pumps oxygen from a tank into his nose) and rarely has the energy to visit is boat.

Some days he barely has the energy to reach across the kitchen table. After smoking for 50 years, Hamp said he’d trade all the pleasure he got from cigarettes for one more good day of breathing. Now that he’s dying, Hamp wants to warn young smokers about what awaits them.

“Tobacco is just a matter of time. It doesn’t matter who you are,” Hamp said. “Why tempt how long? You’re playing with your life.”

Even though he sold cigarettes when he was growing up, Hamp said he didn’t start smoking until after he went to college. He said both of his parents smoked and it was the accepted thing to do. When he was in the military, more than 200 of the 244 soldiers in his company smoked. Within a year of starting, Hamp said he was smoking 1 1/2 packs a day.

Hamp managed a marina in Michigan, then moved to Anchorage in 1980 after visiting a friend and settled in Haines in 1983. He said he was extremely active until his early 60s and working a 16-hour day was nothing.

Picture of Old ManBut seven years ago, while pulling a shrimp pot, Hamp said he “folded up.” He said it was like someone “put a plastic bag over his mouth,” he wasn’t in pain but he couldn’t get any air. “It was like I’d been punched in the stomach, that’s one way to describe it,” he said.

Hamp said he was real close to respiratory arrest. When he went to the doctor, the tests found scar tissue from pneumonia and emphysema. He was told if he quit smoking, he might have four or five years left.

After several failed attempts at quitting on his own, Hamp called SEARHC Tobacco Health Educator Jane Weagant. She helped him cut down to a couple of cigarettes a day, but the addiction is too powerful for him to completely give up smoking.

“I know it’s killing me, and it’s shortening what life I have left. But it still is very difficult to quit,” said Hamp, who hopes his story can help someone else quit or decide not to start smoking. “If I had to do it over again I wouldn’t start.”
